Germany VS Spain

These last two months two students from San Viator went to Germany for an Erasmus+ Project and now two students from Germany are here in Spain with us. Now they compare the differences between some typical things, like the food.

Germany

The Spanish students tell us that the food is really nice. These are some examples of the German food:

Schnitzel, which is  meat with sauce

Spätzle, which is like noodle and you can eat it with other things like sauce.

Kartoffelsalat: it is a cold meal and it is basically cooked and cut potato with some spices.

Bratwurst, which is a typical German sausage

Geschnetzeltes, which are some strings of meat with a typical cream

Gulasch, these are pieces of meat with a sauce

Schwarzwälderkirschtorte: it is a typical dessert, and it is a really really big cake made of cherries and cream.

Heisse Himbeeren mit Vanilleeis: it is hot raspberry with vanilla ice cream, which the German use to eat in birthdays or parties.

Kaiserschmarren, scrumbled pancake with marmalade or nutella or whatever

Braten, it’s a really big meat which you eat often with Spätzle

Maultaschen these are pieces of noodles with a special stuffing made of meat or vegetables

Bretzel, it is the most typical bread.

Sauerkraut, it’s a special vegetable made as a salat.

Rouladen, its rolls meat with bacon and cucumber inside.

Berliner, it’s a sponge cake full of marmalade and with some sugar on the top, something really good.

Käsespätzle, which is just Spätzle (we have already explained it) with cheese and milk.

The German students say it is very different from their food but they also like it very much actually. These are the examples:

Tortilla de patata: it is a very typical Spanish food. It is an omelet with potatoes and onion (opcional)

Paella: it is made of yellow rice, combined with some pieces of meat or fish and seafood.

Torrijas: Thay are pieces of bread with milk and egg and then we fry it and we cover it with mixed sugar and cinnamon. There are many ways to do it, but this is the most basic one. The Spanish use to eat this dessert on Easter

Gazpacho: this is a cream made of tomato, bread, oil and vinegar and some other vegetables or spieces.

Migas: These are little pieces of bread with paprika and little pieces of meat.

Cocido, which is a very typical meal from Madrid; it is made of soup with chickpeas, meat and some other vegetables like carrots (opcional).

Churros y porras:  these are strings of a fried mass made of water, oil, and flour, which you can eat with a hot chocolate, for breakfast in times of celebration.

Pan con tomate (“pantumaca”), which is a very simple meal, but delicious. it is bread, with oil, salt and tomato, basically.

Jamón ibérico (Iberian ham): this is also very typical in spain. It is ham from the Iberian pork.

Arroz con leche: This is a typical dessert, and it is made of rice in milk with cinnamon.

Empanada: it is bread full of tuna and some vegetables. It can be also made of meat or only vegetables (there are a lot of recepies)

Pisto: which is chopped vegetables in a tomato sauce, which you can eat with a fried egg.

Croquetas: They are little fried balls of meat, fish or vegetables, made with milk, flour and water.

Flan: a rich custard dessert with a layer of soft caramel on top, as opposed to crème brûlée, which is custard with a hard caramel top.

Horchata: typical mediterranean beverage made of tigernuts (chufas) or almonds, mixed with water and sugar.

Chorizo: several types of pork sausage originating from the Iberian Peninsula.

Spain

In general, the German students say they like the food, but the meal they like the most is “tortilla de patata”. The Spanish students also liked the German food and they say that “Schnitzel” and”Kartoffelsalat” are their favourites.
